The first play Vita Nova performed: 'Scratchin' the Surface', was devised and written by the group with Sharon Muiruri and was seen by over 70,000 people during its run (1999-2007). It is drawn from the real life experiences of members of Vita Nova. Great use was made of drama techniques in the workshop that follows each performance.

The play centres on a young man called Jay who becomes involved in the club scene and drug addiction, with the initial highs and subsequent lows, it portrays the impact this character has on the people around him.
