What has Vita Nova done for me? Ivan

29 August, 2025

I first came across Vita Nova end of 2024. At the time, I was looking for a volunteer opportunity as part of my recovery journey. I was broken. I had everything going for me but when life became unmanageable I had lost all self worth and self love. I wanted to reclaim my artistic soul and I felt an overwhelming awe when I walked through those doors. I kind of mentioned my background stint in musical theatre and compositional and acting background, and I think they never wanted me to leave. They have a wonderful way of making you feel found.

That’s where Vita Nova entered my life. What began as a voluntary role quickly grew into commitment. I became involved in their pantomime, their ensemble performances, and then they got me to play the lead in a number of shows. I’ve never been in the spotlight – I was normally the creative in the background running the show. But I was thrust into the limelight, I was given a duty of care to tell honest stories about the cycle of abuse, addiction, and mental health.

Over time I discovered aspects of myself through the workshops and performances. I found confidence I didn’t know I had. Standing in front of others and sharing a piece of myself was once terrifying; now, it feels like liberation.

The impact has gone beyond creativity. Being part of Vita Nova has helped me to rebuild a sense of belonging. Recovery can sometimes feel like starting from scratch, and having people beside me who understand that process has been transformative. The encouragement I’ve received has carried me through difficult times, and the friendships I’ve made remind me that I’m not on this path alone.

What has surprised me most is how much Vita Nova has helped me to see potential where I once saw limits. It has opened doors I wouldn’t have dared to knock on before — whether through learning new skills, contributing to group projects, or simply believing that my story matters.

Today, when I look back on how far I’ve come, I know Vita Nova has played a huge part in that journey. It’s not just a theatre company or a community arts group — it’s a lifeline. It has taught me that recovery isn’t just about leaving something behind; it’s about discovering what you’re capable of building.

For me, Vita Nova means growth, connection, and hope. It has helped me shape a life that feels meaningful again. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
